METHAMPHETAMINE

Crystal Meth Addiction

Understanding Methamphetamine Addiction and Its Effects on the Body and Mind

Methamphetamines, or “meth”, are a powerful class of synthetic stimulant drugs that come with a high chance of addiction. Meth can be a fine white powder or a clear or bluish rock called “crystal meth.” These drugs can be smoked, injected, snorted, or taken as a pill, making it crucial to familiarize yourself with the various forms of meth and their effects to support a loved one in overcoming methamphetamine addiction. While some methamphetamines have been used in a prescription medical setting to treat specific challenges like ADHD, most commonly, meth is found in its illicit form as a highly addictive, potent, and dangerous drug

Meth is a stimulant, speeding up the body’s natural processes and leading to a myriad of effects on the body and mind. Some of the physical effects of meth use and methamphetamine addiction include:

  • Elevated heart rate and blood pressure
  • Increased body temperature
  • Sudden bursts of energy
  • Dry mouth
  • Shaking, tremors, or jerky movements
  • Increased sweating
  • Picking at skin, scabs, or sores

Long-term use of methamphetamines can also lead to drastic changes in weight, particularly weight loss, and damage to the skin, hair, and especially teeth and gums, potentially resulting in “meth mouth.” Methamphetamine addiction can also result in a weakened immune system, leading to even more damage to the body, especially if injecting meth by using unsanitary needles. Prolonged and excessive use of meth can also lead to damage to the liver and kidneys, bringing unique challenges to the body, especially when using more meth before the body has a chance to heal.

However, the effects of meth addiction also extend to your mind, with equally intense effects on the brain. Use of meth can lead to:

  • Feelings of intense euphoria
  • Intense bouts of energy
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Potential violent outbursts
  • Paranoia
  • Altered sense of perception
  • Compromised decision-making skills or an increase in risk-taking behavior

Long-term use of meth can also lead to meth-induced psychosis and can lead to cognitive impairment even when not directly engaging with the drug. Difficulty making or recalling memories, mental health concerns even when not using methamphetamines, persistent paranoia, and more are also possible. Intense use of meth can also lead to hallucinations and other intense challenges.

These challenges also do not necessarily include all of the dangers that meth addiction can present. In addition to the immediate effects of meth on your health, regardless of the form being used, methamphetamine addiction can profoundly affect your daily life in a myriad of ways. Substance abuse and addiction can lead to damage to personal relationships and impact your academic or professional life through compromised performance or attendance. Methamphetamine addiction can also lead to mental health disorders, self-isolation, and financial challenges.

Nothing about overcoming methamphetamine addiction is easy. It can affect every part of daily life and the lives of your friends, family members, and loved ones. However, treatment is always possible, and identifying methamphetamine addiction and the need for change is the first step in your recovery journey.

Why Professional Treatment Is Essential for Methamphetamine Addiction Recovery

Methamphetamine addiction is a powerful disease. Addiction isn’t the result of any lack of willpower or commentary on a person’s character. Rather, it is a disease that fundamentally affects the brain, body, and dopamine receptors. Overcoming meth addiction is a comprehensive journey, and involves much more than just stopping the use of meth. Rather, it is a wholly transformational effort, addressing the effects of addiction, mental health needs, trauma, personal experiences, and holistic healing, all while navigating the ongoing effects of addiction, stress, and withdrawal.

Professional treatment is essential in approaching each of your needs. While having caring supports ready to help you through your healing, the education, resources, and community available at a professional treatment facility like Thrive Treatment can introduce you to an entire world of healing and change that is crucial in not just exploring your unique healing journey, but maintaining your sober change in your long-term, meth-free life.

Medical Detox for Methamphetamine Addiction

Detox is the first step toward a meth-free life. However, it can also be an incredibly difficult step in your healing journey. During detox, withdrawal symptoms can be at their most intense, bringing urges, cravings, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, depression, and a myriad of other challenges that can compromise your recovery effort and dedication early in your recovery journey.

Thrive Treatment‘s effective medical detox programs are designed to help you overcome these challenges while putting your best foot forward in overcoming methamphetamine addiction. 24/7 supervision and medical support, along with medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to address specific withdrawal symptoms and challenges, are all available to help you navigate this first important phase of your recovery. We create a comfortable, supportive space to address the emotional, mental, and physical effects of detox while also creating a plan to transition to further levels of care. Our detox programs last for about two weeks to expel meth from your system and create a plan to address your unique needs and goals in further levels of treatment

evidence based

Evidence-Based Modalities: CBT, DBT, and ACT

Thrive Treatment uses various evidence-based treatment modalities for a proven approach to change. Each of these can be further personalized to address your needs in treatment in a proven way to not just challenge the effects of metha addiction but engage in sustainable, transformative healing.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, is the “gold standard” of these evidence-based modalities. This form of psychotherapy explores how your thoughts and beliefs can inform your actions, as well as how your behaviors can impact your perspectives and worldview. It uses this framework to explore new perspectives and ideas, challenging self-destructive behaviors and thoughts, and replacing these unhealthy aspects of daily life with healthier alternatives in your recovery journey.

Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, is also used at Thrive Treatment for effective healing in overcoming methamphetamine addiction. DBT focuses on the emotional well-being of each person, exploring how complex emotions can co-exist in otherwise seemingly opposite situations. This form of psychotherapy improves emotional resilience by acknowledging and confronting difficult emotions and contextualizing these feelings for a more positive outlook. By accepting difficult feelings like anxiety and contextualizing them with positive feelings, you can improve emotional resilience, empowering you to be more in control of your emotions and responses to stress.

Lastly, acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT, further explores acceptance as a way of processing difficult emotions. While pushing down uncomfortable feelings is common, learning to accept them can be much more effective in processing these feelings. This form of therapy empowers you to set a series of core values and goals and challenges you to act on these difficult feelings in a way that aligns with them, creating a structure to process stress and overcome new challenges at any stage of your treatment

The therapies and approaches that work best for you will be unique. Working with any of our trained staff members can help you find the strategies, perspectives, and treatment methods that work best for your lasting sobriety.

Peer Support and Community Integration

While living with methamphetamine addiction can feel incredibly isolating, it has far-reaching effects that affect not just your life, but the lives of family members, friends, loved ones, and even coworkers and peers. However, healing also doesn’t have to be an isolated effort, and Thrive Treatment celebrates the role that peer support and community can play in effective healing.

We create an accepting space to explore your healing while introducing you to an entire community of people from all walks of life coming together in solidarity of healing across California. Peers can be an amazing source of new ideas, support, and sympathy, with each person pursuing their next sober milestone and accomplishment in sobriety. Working together to create a community of acceptance, belonging, and accountability can help you find a community that accepts without judgment and encourages effective change in your healing journey.

Building a Community for Long-Term Recovery

While meeting peers in residential treatment can help you establish a new sober life in meth addiction treatment, these communities can continue to support your healing journey long after your residential treatment stay has come to an end. Continued outpatient group support, alumni meetings, and our sober living community partner, The Last House, are all a continued part of your healing journey.

You are never left without a community to fall back on, with continued engagement empowering you to stay connected to a supportive recovery community. Thrive Treatment‘s accepting, long-term recovery community in Santa Monica helps you not just overcome challenges in your treatment but maintain your hard-earned sobriety through support, understanding, accountability, and a sense of belonging that you are never alone in your recovery journey.

Our recovery community supports healing across Los Angeles and beyond, with both alumni and aftercare support programs, as well as virtual care options to connect you to our healing community at any stage of your meth recovery in our Santa Monica community.

Using Mindfulness and Stress Management in Methamphetamine Addiction Treatment

Effective mindfulness strategies and stress management techniques are integral to your continued success and sobriety in methamphetamine addiction treatment. Mindfulness is a state of being aware of yourself in the present moment. Stressful feelings, memories, trauma, and more can all affect your body and mind in different ways. Practicing effective mindfulness can help you stay in control of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in your recovery journey.

Mindfulness strategies like breathing strategies, grounding techniques, yoga, meditation, and much more are all utilized to empower you to stay in control of your reactions to stress and identify new challenges at any stage of recovery. Learning to manage stress through these techniques, setting expectations, developing communication skills, and more are all part of a holistic and effective healing journey at Thrive Treatment.

Relapse Prevention Strategies

Your healing also does not start and end at our walls. Relapse can be a prevalent challenge for many, with even successful alumni navigating their sober lives still putting in the work to manage urges and cravings throughout their successful journey. Thrive Treatment works with you to develop effective relapse prevention strategies for continued success both inside our treatment facility and while you are living your sober life outside our facility.

Mindfulness strategies, communication skills, developing escape plans with supports, and regular support groups are all available to you. Family therapy programs are also available to create personalized relapse prevention strategies at home, with family members and supports playing an integral role in change, while providing educated and understanding support. We also work with you to identify personal triggers and areas of stress through mindfulness strategies to empower you to explore new ways to navigate particular areas of life, like the workplace, communication, and more.

Our commitment to experiential therapies can also help you explore new relapse prevention strategies and self-care opportunities. We offer options like art therapy, film therapy, hiking, and much more, helping you find new hobbies and community efforts to develop your sober lifestyle and identity while effectively managing stress and preventing relapse.

The Role of Medication in Methamphetamine Addiction Recovery

Methamphetamine addiction is a complicated disease, and overcoming its effects while addressing mental health needs, physical needs, and building new skills in sobriety is difficult. Thrive Treatment uses medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to provide directed medication to address specific needs in your healing journey to empower you to fully engage in effective treatment.

The use of medication to address specific symptoms, such as withdrawal symptoms, can be a great option to empower you to make the most of your recovery efforts and time in our treatment programs. However, medication is not a replacement for other forms of treatment or therapy. No medication can “fix” the effects of methamphetamine addiction, nor is there a medication that can replace the hard work it takes to maintain sober change. However, it can provide an additional form of support as you work to create your best approach to your newfound sober life.

Thrive Treatment takes a personalized approach to addiction treatment for meth, including the use of medication. We are prepared to work with you to explore your needs and medication options, if needed, and help you set goals and expectations in medication-assisted treatment for a transformative healing journey.
