Labels and mental health diagnoses can be either freeing in their ability to make sense of complex feelings and symptoms, or restrictive, as each tends to come with it’s own special stigma. At Thrive, our clinical team is trained to assess and diagnose a wide range of mental health issues and curious enough to look beyond them.

Thrive Treatment℠ Offers Innovative, Expert, Evidence-Based Treatment for Mental Illness at Our Treatment Center in Santa Monica, CA.
Is the Oppositional Defiant Disorder or ADHD diagnosed in adolescence really a result of complex trauma? Is the substance use an answer to an underlying chronic depression long ago dismissed and unaddressed?
At Thrive we take the time to get to know each individual, their stories and help to create a new purpose; not to fight against mental illness but to strive for mental well-being.
We treat each individual with the understanding that behaviors and emotions experienced in substance use can mimic many of the symptoms used to diagnose major mental health disorders.
With that in mind, we create a strong foundation of support and understanding both in therapeutic relationships with clinicians as well as among peers. We hope to foster acceptance and empathy among those with a wide range of symptoms and diagnoses; with that goal in mind, we provide psycho-education on the mental health topics listed below to all of our clients.
Through education and proximity, our clients begin to develop empathy for others and find acceptance and understanding for themselves.

Mental Health Disorders We Treat
In a constantly changing, fast-paced world, anxiety may feel like the norm. Sometimes, our clients enter treatment and have no idea that the unease, constant worrying, fatigue and poor concentration even qualifies as anxiety. Luckily…one of the most pervasive, yet treatable mental health concerns.
Anxiety Related Disorders: Generalized Anxiety, OCD, Social Anxiety, Panic
Trauma & Stress
Almost everyone experiences some sort of trauma in their lives. Bullying, abuse, divorce, loss, a health crisis or a natural disaster. In all of these situations, and in many more, one experiences a profound lack of safety, and, for traumatized individuals, this lack of safety never goes away. The effects of trauma are physical, mental and emotional and can stem from events deep in a person’s past. At Thrive, our goal is to create a safe space where clients can begin to release toxic shame, come to understand their physical reactions to trauma, and understand the significant relationship between traumatic experiences and substance use. As we continue to learn more about trauma and trauma related disorders, we begin to find that diagnoses like depression, anxiety, and other behavioral issues are really symptoms and part of a larger whole.
Trauma and Stress: PTSD, Complex/Developmental Trauma
Rarely will a person engaging in persistent substance use and not experience some level of depression or serious destabilization of their mood. With a return to normal sleep schedules, diet and physical activity, some will find these symptoms resolve themselves.
For others, they may find that the depression or severe mood swings (Bipolar Disorder) are what fueled their substance use in the first place. In these cases we provide education allowing clients to learn about their symptoms without the influence of drugs and alcohol, incorporate medication management and assessment by a psychiatrist into their treatment plan if necessary, and help them find their own motivation for change.
Mood Disorders: Depression, Bipolar I, Bipolar II
Despite evidence that nearly 1 in 3 individuals struggling with an eating disorder are male (according to the National Eating Disorder Association), men continue to live in shame and isolation regarding body image and disordered eating behaviors.
Eating Disorders: Bulimia, Anorexia, Binging
Recent research on substance use disorders points to a high correlation between substance abuse and maladaptive personality types. At Thrive we spend a great deal of time identifying the specific nature of a client’s addictive personality and how it relates to their use. This is often the most challenging work that we do at Thrive but we believe that helping clients to better manage in this area drastically improves treatment outcomes.
Personality Disorders: Borderline, Narcissistic, Antisocial, Dependent
