Almost everyone experiences some sort of trauma in their lives. Bullying, abuse, divorce, loss, a health crisis or a natural disaster. In all of these situations, and in many more, one experiences a profound lack of safety, and, for traumatized individuals, this lack of safety never goes away. The effects of trauma are physical, mental and emotional and can stem from events deep in a person’s past. At Thrive, our goal is to create a safe space where clients can begin to release toxic shame, come to understand their physical reactions to trauma, and understand the significant relationship between traumatic experiences and substance use. As we continue to learn more about trauma and trauma related disorders, we begin to find that diagnoses like depression, anxiety, and other behavioral issues are really symptoms and part of a larger whole.
