How Does Rehab Work? A Guide for Addiction Recovery

We know more about addiction than ever before, but it is still a very confusing disease, and that’s true even when you are in the middle of the struggle. It’s hard to understand why you continue to use a drug that harms you. If you’ve found that you’re unable to quit using on your own, you may start to feel defeated and wonder what to do next. You may be asking ‘how does rehab work’ in helping you to break free of addiction, and the answer is that rehab offers a multi-faceted approach to a complex problem. Addiction is a disease of mind, body, and spirit. Getting sober requires addressing all three, and it’s not always a “one size fits all” approach. Seeking treatment at rehab allows you to receive additional support and the benefit of an evidence-based path to your sobriety. At Thrive Treatment, we understand how hard it can be to break free of addiction, and we’re here to help you.

Step One: Getting Admitted

The first step in getting treatment is admission to a program. You might begin by researching the programs in your area and/or the programs covered by your insurance plan. Your research can be done by searching online or working with your healthcare provider. As you complete your information gathering, you’ll want to see what types of programs are offered at each facility and how their approach matches up with your goals. You’ll want to know if they have programs to meet any co-occurring disorders you may have, such as anxiety or depression. Likewise, you’ll want to see if they are familiar with treating addiction to your drug of choice. Once you have completed your research and have selected a facility, they can work with you to get approval from your insurance company and get you admitted. While it can seem overwhelming to start this process, there is help available to get it done.

Step Two: Completing the Program

Once you have been accepted into a program, it’s time to dig and do the work. This is when you find out how rehab works. Nearly all rehab programs begin with detox because you must rid your body of the toxins. You have to clear your body of the drugs before you can start to do the work of living without them. After you complete detox, you will likely participate in individual therapy, group therapy, skills groups, and more. Rehab is about identifying some of the factors that led you to addiction and then working your way through them. It’s also about learning how to cope with life’s stressors without turning to drugs and alcohol. You’ll learn skills such as mindfulness, meditation, and movement. These skills will help you to move through difficulties in sobriety without picking up. The length of your rehab will be determined by your treatment plan, which is different for each individual. At the onset, you will work with treatment professionals to set your goals, and you’ll complete treatment as those goals are achieved.

Step Three: Completing Aftercare

While it may seem like getting sober is the most critical part of your recovery journey, staying sober is just as important. Getting sober and staying sober require two different skill sets. Participating in aftercare provides you with additional support as you start using the skills you learned during treatment. Researchers have found that completing aftercare significantly increases the chances of staying sober after treatment. While attending treatment, you will learn new skills and new coping mechanisms.  Aftercare allows you additional support while you test out these new skills out in the world. Staying sober in treatment and staying sober outside of treatment can feel like two different things. Aftercare helps to bridge that gap.
