Addiction is an all-encompassing disease, a mental disorder that breaks down the body and mind over time. It’s scary, overwhelming and confusing, like wandering a maze in the dark. One that gets progressively more complicated and painful to find your way out of the longer you’re in it.
There is a way out though.
Once you or a loved one see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel and make the conscious choice to seek treatment, a path opens before you. A team forms around you and starts the journey of recovery. Rehab has worked wonders for so many millions of people over the years, all of whom started from the same place you are now. A place of wanting to change and exploring how. In that process of searching for the right facility and treatment option for you, one common concern invariably and almost always arises: how can I afford this?
The cost of rehab can be a major hurdle and point of worry for those seeking professional help in overcoming a substance abuse disorder. Prices can be prohibitively high and the last thing you want is to have money be the main roadblock to a treatment program that could change or even save your life or the life of a loved one. Fortunately, your insurance plan through First Health will very likely cover some portion of the costs associated with addiction treatment.

The length of time that First Health will pay for treatment isn’t necessarily set in stone. Each instance of addiction is unique and each person going through it requires a different level and period of rehab to make it back to sobriety. To that end, a treatment facility will work in consultation with First Health to create a program that lasts as long as is necessary to yield the best result.
The length of any given treatment regimen takes into account many factors, not least of which is the severity of an addiction. The longer you’ve been addicted, it stands to reason that a longer time will be needed to undo the physical and mental dependency on the substance. Just as your treatment provider takes that into account, so too does First Health.
As far as what First Health covers, it will largely depend on the particular plan you or your employer has.
Because treatment for substance use disorders became an essential benefit for plans on the Marketplace after the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, in general you can now expect some level of coverage for addiction among private insurers like First Health as well.
While each plan will have its own specific set of benefits, broadly speaking, a major insurer like First Health will likely cover some portion of the typical rehab and treatment options, like:
Making sure you’re using an in-network provider, that is a treatment center that has an agreement on the rates with First Health, is, of course, the key to unlocking the most advantageous pricing but through an extensive national network known as the First Health Complementary Network, which is used in a secondary position, First Health can get you savings even outside of your primary network.
And for those living in Michigan and Colorado specifically, Cofinity is among the leading networks in the region.
As with all insurance companies and plans, there will be deductibles, copays and coinsurance costs associated with treatment. The deductible is the amount you’re required to pay before your insurance coverage kicks in. This amount varies by plan and is dependent on your monthly premium so the more you pay per month the less your deductible would likely be. Copays are a flat rate you pay and coinsurance is the percentage of the service you’d pay after the deductible is met. Coinsurance is similarly related to the monthly premium, in that higher premiums will have a lower coinsurance percentage.
That said, before committing to any treatment, it’s critical to make sure you’re fully aware of what you’ll be on the hook for before and after your First Health insurance kicks in addition to what they will and won’t cover and if there are any pre authorizations required for specific types of care.
