Intro to Teenagers and Mental Health

Mental health problems are prevalent in teens, and mental health is something that is being spoken about more regularly today. Although it is somewhat normal for teenagers to exhibit moody behavior seemingly out of nowhere, there is a difference between mood swings and mental health struggles.

Physicians define mental illness in teens based on several factors. For a person to be diagnosed with a depressive disorder, a physician will look for depressed mood indicators including lack of interest in hobbies and recreational activities, changes in sleep patterns, onset of guilt, changes in energy levels, difficulty concentrating, a change in appetite, lack of motivation, and thoughts of suicide. If five of these symptoms are present every day for at least two weeks, a physician will typically diagnose this person with a depressive disorder. A lot of the symptoms listed can also be present in teens who do not have a depressive disorder or mental illness, however an indicator for the onset of a mental illness is when these behaviors are sudden and differ from a teen’s normal behavior.

When trying to determine whether your child or loved one is suffering from mental health complications, there are some clear signs to look out for as well. For most kids, a huge indicator of the onset of a mental health disorder is a decline in grades at school, but there are also several other indicators to look out for. Mental health disorders are often characterized by a sudden change in behavior such as pulling away from school, friends, and activities that had previously been enjoyable.

Thrive Treatment offers teen mental health treatment for those suffering from mental health issues including anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, Bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD, and Psychosis. With over 48 million Americans suffering from mental health disorder, we make it our mission to help people with our quality mental health treatment program for teens.

What Are Common Mental Illnesses in Teens?

Teenagers suffering from addiction need to understand the long-term implications that drug abuse can have on their lives. A lot of the time, drugs and alcohol can seem like an easy fix to some of the problems that teenagers are facing, but teens are not thinking about the long-term consequences of these actions.

Teen drug rehab is essential for teenagers who are abusing drugs or alcohol. Teenagers are very impressionable, and they need to understand the implications of their behavior. It can be difficult to convince a teen that they are wrong, and sometimes, parents may seem like the enemy. Offering help to your teenager by sending them to drug rehab for teens can change their lives forever.

At our teen treatment center, our goal is to provide comprehensive therapeutic and educational services to teens and adolescents who are struggling with addiction. Our dedicated staff is trained to work with teens and take an approach that has a meaningful impact on a struggling adolescent. Sober living in Los Angeles is made possible at Thrive Treatment through our dedicated team of therapists, psychologists, and medical professionals. We want teenagers to know that there is another way and that they have a bright, drug-free future ahead.

What Are Common
Mental Illnesses in Teens?

There are many different mental illnesses that are plaguing the lives of teens, and some of the most common include anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, mood disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

Anxiety is a mental illness that comes in many forms – whether it be generalized anxiety, social anxiety, obsessive compulsion, panic disorder, or PTSD – and it is heavily present in teens today. General anxiety disorder is categorized by chronic anxiety, exaggerated worry, and tension, even when there is nothing to provoke its onset. Signs of general anxiety disorder include feeling restless, fatigue, struggling with concentration, muscle tension, irritability, struggling with sleep, and an overbearing sense of worry.

Social anxiety disorder is also common in teens, and some of the symptoms of this disorder include feelings of anxiety days or weeks before a social event, struggling to make and keep friends, experiencing nausea around others, worrying about being judged, feeling anxious at the thought of talking to or being around other people, extreme self-consciousness and fear of humiliation, embarrassment, or rejection, and avoiding places where other people might be. Social anxiety disorder is common in teens because at a younger age it is more difficult to see the bigger picture, and we tend to put pressure on social situations that will not matter in the long run.

Another common mental illness in teens is depression. According to Mental Health America, adolescent depression is increasing at an alarming rate. According to their findings, recent surveys indicate that as many as one in five teens suffers from clinical depression. This mental illness can also be difficult to diagnose in teens because teenagers are known for acting moody and exhibiting abnormal behavior and mood swings. It can also be difficult for adolescents to properly understand or express their feelings, therefore it is common for adults to miss the signs of depression in their teenagers. Some of the symptoms that come with depression include poor performance at school, feelings of sadness and hopelessness, withdrawal from social events or hobbies/activities, anger, lack of energy, lack of enthusiasm, overreaction to criticism, poor self-esteem, feelings of guilt, restlessness and agitation, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, problems with authority, and suicidal thoughts and actions.

Thrive Treatment offers innovative and evidence-based treatment for mental illness at our treatment center in Santa Monica, California. Through education and proximity, our clients can develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their conditions as we work through these behaviors together.

Why Send Your Child to a Mental Health Treatment Center?

Adolescent mental health treatment comes in many different forms. Teens who suffer from mental illness are sometimes not capable of getting the help they need on their own. As a parent, it is essential to check in on your children and look for signs of behavioral changes that may indicate mental illness.

As a parent, once you’ve determined that your child is experiencing a mental health disorder, communicating with them may be a difficult thing to do. It is hard to know how to know how to talk to your teen, when to speak to them, and it can be hard to know whether you are saying the right things. By offering your child the opportunity to seek help from professionals can be essential to their recovery.

At Thrive Treatment, we take the time to get to know each individual client to help as we strive to improve their mental well-being. Getting help can be the difference between long-term suffering and a quick and easy turnaround, therefore the sooner we get help for our children, the better off they will be.

We Work with Most Insurance

At Thrive Treatment℠ we accept most private insurance plans and we are in network with Cigna, MHN Health Net, First Health, and Anthem Blue Cross.  Additional payment options are available so don’t hesitate to give us a call so we can get you the help that you need.

How Our Mental Health Treatment Center for Teens Can Help

Depression, anxiety, and mental illnesses in teens can be serious, and if left untreated, symptoms and behaviors can worsen. Seeking professional advice and care for your child is constructive and can be essential to the improvement of their mental state. Therapy can be a resource for teens who are struggling to understand their depression or mental illness, and it can be helpful in teaching teens how to cope with stressful situations.

Some of the ways our team of expert clinicians can help teens with mental illness is through psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, mindfulness, meditation techniques, and medication. At Thrive, we will evaluate each individual person and determine the methodology that will work in improving their mental health disorder for the long term.

At our teen treatment center, our goal is to provide comprehensive therapeutic and educational services to teens and adolescents who are struggling with mental illness and mental health disorders. Our dedicated staff of expert medical practitioners is trained to work with teens and adolescents who are suffering from anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress, OCD, ADD/ADHD, Psychosis, and more.

At Thrive Treatment, we do not subscribe to one specific modality.  We take an individualistic approach to treating mental illness, and we believe that everyone has their own experience with mental health, and therefore everyone will have different needs to make a full recovery. Our goal is for our clients to gain a deeper understanding of their disorder, and to teach them how to work through some of their issues so they could improve their conditions. We pride ourselves on our one-one-one approach to treating clients and by offering personalized advice to help them explore their purpose and achieve their goals.

Lastly, we want to have fun together! Working through mental illness can be extremely taxing on a young teen, and to blow off some steam, we provide a fun, clean environment for people to find new excitement in their lives.
